Here's what Berkshire has been buying ... |
In its first purchases of the stock since mid-December, Berkshire Hathaway increased its Sirius XM position by a modest $54 million late last week and early this week. Over three days, it picked up 2.3 million shares of the satellite radio company at an average price of $23.38 each. That lifted Berkshire's stake to 35.4% of SIRI's outstanding shares, up from 34.7%.
It is, by far, the largest Sirius XM shareholder, well ahead of even Liberty Media Chairman John Malone's 7%. (Liberty split-off Sirius XM last September.)
Since it began occasional buys last October, Berkshire has spent $350.8 million to add 14.6 million SIRI shares, increasing its holding by almost 14% to nearly 120 million shares valued at a bit more than $3 billion. |
One of Berkshire's portfolio managers, probably Ted Weschler, may be doing some bargain hunting with the stock down by nearly 50% over the past year. (Given the relatively small size of the position and purchases it is very unlikely Warren Buffett himself is responsible for Berkshire's SIRI shares.) |
Wall Street doesn't share Berkshire's apparent optimism. Of the 14 analysts following SIRI, one has a "sell" rating, five have "underperforms," and five say "hold."
The average price target of $24.31 is a bit under the current price of $25.44. |
.. and what it hasn't been buying |
With Occidental Petroleum's stock price falling back to the vicinity of where Berkshire bought some shares in late December, last week there was speculation Buffett & Co. had been, or would be, adding to its position again.
|
As an owner of more than 10%, Berkshire has two business days to disclose any moves. We haven't seen anything on the SEC site so far, so we know that nothing happened through at least Tuesday of this week. |
Stock certificate with Buffett's signature sells for $15,000 |
A 1962 stock certificate signed by Warren Buffett was sold for $15,000 last week at an auction in Connecticut. That was at the low end of the auction house's estimate of $15,000 to $20,000.
In its description of the lot, University Archives says there are only eight known Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company certificates signed by Buffett. |
Buffett's signature appears on the back of the certificate that had been issued to "Buffett Partnership Limited" to facilitate its transfer to a different holder. |
